Hart Head Cottage, Rydal built in 1906 for the artist Fred Yates and his family.

Fred Yates first came to Ambleside in the Lake District to paint the portrait of Charlotte Mason, the educationalist and founder of the PNEU. During this visit the Yates family stayed in a cottage on the Rydal Estate, property of Squire Le Fleming whose portrait Fred Yates also came to paint. It was whilst working on this portrait that Fred Yates told the Squire that he had fallen in love with the area and wished to rent any cottage which might become vacant. The Squire replied that he would be an interesting addition to the village and that if he chose a location in the valley, then a house would be built which he could rent. He lived there for the rest of his life. His wife Emily and daughter Mary also lived there. Mary died in 1974.

John Hodkinson & Gilly Marshall met in 1965, married in 1968 and have lived at Rydal since 1971, and at Hart Head since 1976.
