Was a charismatic and sociable character, with a wide range of friends (and through his portrait painting, an even wider range of aquaintances.) This circle also included the poet John Drinkwater, Canon Rawnsley, Clemence Dane, Henry Wood, E. H. Badley (the founder of Bedales School), and Woodrow Wilson, the President of the USA (and at whose inauguration at the White House, Yates was a guest of honour.)
